That was the (thr)eek that was
In which Neverbury is one year old and finds its way back into the charts!
Welcome to Neverbury’s first anniversary has been and gone, and what a week it was!
I picked up a lot of new subscribers to the newsletter with the promise of a sneak peek of “Return to Neverbury”. (Hi everyone - I hope you enjoyed meeting “The Thing in the Basement") If you missed the special download, keep your eyes peeled for another chance at some more freebies in an upcoming newsletter!
Welcome to Neverbury was also on special offer at just 99p for the anniversary weekend. This, along with offerings to a number of dark entities, propelled the book straight up the horror charts to a very respectable number 3.
I was kept off the top spot by some guy called “Stephen King” and some other Johnny-Come-Lately called Del Toro.
It was really great to see the book still getting a fantastic response. It’s a great reminder for any author, indie or not, that it’s not just about publication day or launch week. Books have a very long tail. It also feels kind of apt that after a little slumber, Neverbury has risen once more.
(And I’m not going to do a long tale joke. Seriously, what do you take me for?)
Now, can we talk?
If you’re a subscriber, you should also have received an email opening up a Substack chat about The Thing in the Basement. I’ve never done one of these before and have no idea what to expect. I am physically and emotionally braced.
What else has been going on?
As always, I’m hard at work on new stories. Return to Neverbury is gathering pace and I feel confident that the new book will drop in October, just in time for “Spooky Season”. Welcome to Neverbury had its best-ever sales in October of last year, with even the likes of King and Del Toro failing to keep me from a number-one spot. Fingers crossed I can repeat that in October 2024.
In the meantime, I’m excited to find out what people think of The Pennyworth Recursion, my latest story for The Lucy Wilson Mysteries from Candy Jar.
You can order your copy of The Pennyworth Recursion here.
Miscellany
What I'm Watching: Obviously, I’m watching all the usual nerd stuff. House of the Dragon is back, Doctor Who has just gone. But, right now, my real TV obsessions are Pressure Cooker, Barbecue Showdown, and Deadman’s Curse. I’m bracing myself to start Season 3 of The Bear.
I’ve finally watched the final episode of Inside No.9 as well. I’m not over it.
(Welcome to Neverbury gets compared to Inside No.9 a lot. It always makes me happy. I love that show and if fans of it are enjoying my stories as well, that’s a huge compliment in my book)
What I'm Reading: Into the Uncanny by Danny Robins. I love a good ghost hunt and Uncanny offers just that. I’m very much #teambeliever.
What I’m Listening To: South Wales ONE, of course! Soundclash ran with Pride Anthems last week and it’s my favourite show for a while.

XOXO
Well, that’s me. It’s been a busy couple of weeks and it feels like time to retreat back to my writing cave to come up with some more stories for Return to Neverbury.
Until next time…
